FLIP TRAY

A healthy contraption which helps you to conveniently store various condiments
Goal

Design products for the Indian kitchen so as to give consumers a comfort while using glass as a material and repurpose a surplus of glass tubes to build a new revenue system for Borosil.

Solution

The Flip Tray is a sweet spot between the client's business problem and the lack of a healthy, easy to clean storage solution for the popular staples on the Indian dining table.

Some Insights

Indians love various condiments from pickles to dips and sauces to mouth-fresheners. They become a part of most of their meals and are usually transferred into smaller containers which are difficult to clean and store their oily pungent memories for a long time.

How may we give consumers a comfort with glass?

Prototyping and Manufacturing
Plastic injection molding

The initial concept underwent several rounds of iterations both in terms of its form and engineering structure. A number of prototypes were made, starting from a basic cardboard, HIP (High Impact Polystyrene) to 3D printed ones followed by injection molding.

The final refined design achieved structural stability and strength while following aesthetic and functional roles.

The mold was designed such that the parting line appeared on the edges to get a smooth surface. The ejector pins too were strategically placed. A two cavity mold for the lid and a single cavity mold for the body was developed. The mold was etched to get a Matt finish on the surface of the product.

The tooling constraints were accommodated with design changes and detailing.
